BSU: My family away from home

When I think about the Baptist Student Union (BSU) at Co-Lin Community College, the word that comes to mind is “family.” I’ve been involved in church my whole life so having the BSU is like having another family in Christ.

From the moment I graduated high school I was told to get involved on campus at Co-Lin as much as possible without overdoing myself. I knew from flyers around campus that BSU had a kickoff event the first Monday night we started school. I thought to myself, “What are you going to be doing on a Monday night besides maybe some homework?” So I gave it a try and boy, am I glad I did.

As soon as I walked in, I was taken aback by how welcomed and at home I felt in a building I had never stepped foot in before. From then on out, I could not wait to get done with class to go hang out, fellowship, and play ping-pong at the BSU.

As soon as I walked in, I was taken aback by how welcomed and at home I felt in a building I had never stepped foot in before.

Through the BSU God also presented me with opportunities to get involved and serve. One way was by helping lead worship. I love to sing and worship. If I am being honest, it is my happy place but even greater than that would have to be the honor I have of serving my community as the BSU president this school year at Co-Lin.

College can be so scary and overwhelming at times, but knowing I have my Father in heaven and another body of believers to help and uplift me at any point in time is beyond encouraging. In this time of uncertainty, it is even more reassuring to have a place like the BSU. It never ceases to amaze me how good God is when he creates places like the BSU. It is a place of love and encouragement and acceptance no matter your skin color, religion, or circumstances you may be going through, and to me that is truly a blessing.
