BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. — Blue Mountain Christian University proudly recognizes Dr. Ronald T. Meeks, Dean of the College of Christian Studies and Worship Arts, Chair of the Department of Biblical Studies, Professor of Biblical Studies, and Director of Church Relations and Ministerial Recruiting, for nearly three decades of distinguished service to the university and more than fifty years of faithful gospel ministry.
A native of Corinth, Mississippi, Dr. Meeks was saved and baptized at Oakland Baptist Church at the age of 11. At the age of 13, he sensed a call to preach the gospel and was licensed to the ministry in 1975 under Dr. Tommy Vinson. This calling led to thousands of sermons and messages delivered for more than fifty-one years, with the gospel of Jesus Christ always serving as the central theme of his preaching and teaching.
Over the course of his ministry, Dr. Meeks has preached in more than 400 revivals, impacting countless lives through the proclamation of God’s Word. As an interim pastor and preacher, he has consistently emphasized four objectives: magnifying Christ, preaching Scripture faithfully, unifying churches in the Great Commission, and encouraging congregations and church staff. One of his favorite Bible verses is 1 Samuel 16:7b, “Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
Since joining the Blue Mountain faculty in 1997 following the retirement of Dr. James L. Travis, Dr. Meeks has become one of the institution’s most respected educators and mentors. His primary focus has been teaching Scripture and preparing the next generation of pastors, church leaders, and Christian servants for gospel ministry.
Throughout his tenure, he has received numerous honors recognizing his commitment to academic excellence, servant leadership, and Christian service. He was recognized as an Outstanding Faculty Honoree at Mississippi Higher Education Appreciation Day in 1999 and 2014 and was named Associational Discipleship Training Director of the Year in 2003. In 2011, he was selected as Blue Mountain College’s Mississippi Humanities Scholar, followed by the Course of the Year Award in 2016 for his Introduction to Christian Theology course. In 2017, he was named the inaugural Jim Futral Professor of Biblical Studies and Proclamation. Additional recognition includes being named Faculty of the Year in 2020, receiving the Palmer-Donnell Servant Leadership Award in 2021, and being presented the Blue Mountain Christian University Alumni Association’s Faithful Servant Award in 2026. These distinctions reflect a career marked by faithful service to Christ, the church, and Christian higher education.
Blue Mountain Christian University President, Dr. Barbara McMillin, added, “Dr. Meeks embodies the very heart of our mission at Blue Mountain Christian University. His unwavering commitment to Scripture, his love for students, and his faithful service to Christ have helped shaped this institution in profound and lasting ways. We are a stronger university because of his leadership, his integrity, and his devotion to preparing men and women for Kingdom service.”
While Dr. Meeks is widely respected for his biblical knowledge and commitment to academic excellence, students often remember him most for the joy, encouragement, and genuine care he brings to the classroom. His classes are known for being engaging, insightful, and filled with meaningful discussion, creating an environment where students not only learn God’s Word but also enjoy the journey of studying it together.
“Dr. Meeks’ classes are some of the best I’ve ever had at Blue Mountain,” said Clayton Thurmond, current student at Blue Mountain Christian University. “He truly went above and beyond to ensure that every class felt like more than a regular lecture, and I am better for having been in his classes. It’s evident that he cares about each and every one of his students individually and that we are all much more than another student to him.”
Students frequently speak of Dr. Meeks’ ability to make Scripture come alive through his teaching, humor, storytelling, and personal investment in their lives. He has a deep love for his students and considers it a privilege to help them discover God’s calling on their lives. That love is returned by generations of alumni who continue to view him as a mentor, encourager, and friend. Whether teaching in the classroom, talking with students after class, or praying with them during times of need, Dr. Meeks has consistently demonstrated Christ-like care and compassion.
Current student, Joshua Hudspeth shared, “The reason so many students love Dr. Meeks is simple: he genuinely loves them. He invests in people, remembers their stories, and never loses sight of the fact that ministry is about serving others for the glory of God.”
Dr. Ronald T. Meeks exemplifies the foundational qualities of Christian leadership and serves as a faithful bearer of God’s truth representing a cornerstone of leadership for Blue Mountain Christian University. Throughout his life and ministry, he has demonstrated unwavering integrity by consistently doing what is right, earning the respect and trust of students, colleagues, pastors, and church members alike. His reliability, authenticity, and servant-hearted spirit have made him a trusted leader whose counsel and example inspire confidence in those he serves.
“Dr. Meeks brought the Bible to life. He taught students how to love the Word, how to dig deep into the Word, and showed us how to live the Word,” said Blue Mountain Christian University alumnus, Dr. John Boler of Calvary, Tupelo, MS. “I owe much gratitude to Dr. Meeks for teaching me how to be a minister of the gospel. He has been and always will be a true friend in the ministry.”
A lifelong Southern Baptist, Dr. Meeks affirms the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 and has invested heavily in ministerial training through both classroom instruction and local church ministry. His teaching areas include Old and New Testament studies, Christian theology, biblical interpretation, preaching, Christian ministry, Baptist life, and Christian education.
Dr. Jason Middleton, a Mississippi pastor of Gaston Baptist Church, Booneville, MS, remarked, “He modeled what it means to be both a scholar and a shepherd. His passion for the gospel, commitment to biblical truth, and genuine care for people have impacted generations of ministers across our state and beyond.”
Beyond the classroom and pulpit, Dr. Meeks has contributed extensively through published Bible studies, sermons, devotional materials, and homiletical resources. His work has been featured through the Stewardship Development Association, Lifeway Christian Resources, WORDsearch Bible Software, and various ministry publications.
Dr. Meeks is also recognized for his clear vision and commitment to God’s calling, helping others see and pursue a hopeful path grounded in Scripture. Blue Mountain Christian University is privileged to benefit from his leadership, teaching, and ministry as he continues to model a life devoted to Christ and guided by the timeless truths of God’s Word.
The President of the Mississippi Baptist Convention, Dr. Andrew Chesteen, remarked, “Dr. Ronald Meeks has served our Lord at Blue Mountain for thirty years modeling what it means to walk in wisdom, increase in knowledge, and exemplify virtue. The Lord has used him to teach thousands of students to know and love the Word of God and the God of the Word. Through his preaching and teaching, he has instilled a passion for biblical preaching to a generation of pastors and missionaries across Mississippi, the United States, and the world. Like so many, I love him and thank the Lord for the privilege of being one of his students, mentees, and friends.”
