Disaster Relief: Update

As with the previous weekend's storms, there are scattered reports of damage in several counties from tornadoes and wind. While the damage appears to be scattered, I will be assessing areas in eastern Rankin and Scott counties September 6, including Leesburg, Pelahatchie, Forkville, and Morton, as these areas have reported more damage to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency. Mississippi Baptist Disaster Relief (MSBDR) assessors and Associational Mission Strategists (AMSs) in Jasper, Smith, Simpson, Leake, Winston, Noxubee, and Lowndes counties are also evaluating damage in their areas. At this time, I do not anticipate a major response from MSBDR. We are starting the week with cold temperatures, and current forecasts indicate the possibility of a winter weather event by the end of the workweek. While forecasting winter weather in Mississippi is always challenging, models suggest some areas of the state may see snow or ice. Currently, forecast models indicate the potential for snow or ice north of Interstate 20, freezing rain or rain along I-20, and rain south of I-20 beginning midday Thursday into Friday. Accumulations are expected to range from a trace to 4 inches in areas north of the Highway 84 corridor, depending on the model. However, there are many variables that could affect the forecast, including a potential shift north or south or changes in the system's speed. A more accurate forecast should be available by Wednesday. Travel later this week could be impacted, so it’s something to keep in mind.
