EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK: So you thought you knew

What is a woman? Oxford Languages, which has been printing dictionaries for well over 150 years and currently in more than 50 languages, simply states, “An adult female human being.” The same, verbatim definition is given in the internationally-esteemed Britannica Dictionary.

Ask a federal government agency, however, and you’ll probably get a blank stare. Fox News Digital recently decided to do that and discovered, “A handful of Biden administration federal agencies were unable to define the meaning of the word ‘woman’ — in some cases, even in relation to their own uses of terms such as ‘women’s health.’”

The U.S. Departments of Justice, Education, Housing and Urban Development, National Institutes of Health, and even the Federal Bureau of Prisons couldn’t seem to come up with an answer. Each one of those agencies administers programs specifically directed at women, but none could define what a woman actually is.

Even the woman just approved for the U.S. Supreme Court can’t define a woman. In the recent U.S. Senate hearing on the nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson, a federal judge for the past nine years, even she couldn’t do so.

Senator Marsha Blackburn (R.-Tenn.) asked Jackson, “Can you provide a definition for the word, ‘woman?’” Jackson’s response: “Can I provide a definition? No, I can’t.” Blackburn followed up with, “You can’t?” Jackson’s response: “Not in this context. I’m not a biologist.”

Kara Dansky, U.S. president of Women’s Declaration International based in England, told Fox News Digital, “President Biden [who nominated Jackson] began to obliterate sex as a distinct category immediately upon taking office when he signed Executive Order 13988 on preventing and combating discrimination on the basis of so-called gender identity and sexual orientation.”

U.S. federal government agencies “have all announced that women no longer exist as a coherent category as a matter of federal administrative law,” Dansky said.

To that end, the Biden administration has fast-tracked all means of achieving “gender reassignment” for even minor children. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, approved treatments for transgender adolescents include: “‘Top’ surgery — to create male-typical chest shape or enhance breasts;” and “‘Bottom’ surgery — surgery on genitals or reproductive organs;” and “ facial feminization or other procedures.”

Also available to children simply confused about their sexual identity will be pro-transgender counseling, harsh hormone treatments, elastic bands designed to suppress breast development, and who knows what else.

“I am truly a stranger in a strange land,” a Believer friend recently lamented — and it’s apparently going to get ever stranger for us. Pray for the children (and adults) who are being led astray by a small but highly vocal group of activists who have captured the attention of politicians who in turn believe they have pandered a few more votes for reelection.

Don’t give up. Don’t be discouraged. Keep praying. Keep witnessing. We have a whole world to save (Matt. 28:18-20). Let’s get busy.
