Evangelist’s case goes before the Supreme Court

Gabriel Olivier’s case is now in the hands of the U.S. Supreme Court. The high court heard arguments Dec. 3 in the case of the Mississippi street evangelist who is challenging a city ordinance that restricts demonstrations outside a public amphitheater.

Authorities arrested Gabriel Olivier in 2021 after refusing to remain in a designated protest zone in Brandon. In response, Olivier filed a lawsuit, claiming the rule violates his First Amendment rights. Lower courts reportedly dismissed the case under Heck v. Humphrey, which limits civil challenges to laws underlying a conviction. Justices looked at whether that precedent should bar future constitutional claims.

The Supreme Court is expected to deliver a decision next year.
