FIRST PERSON: What BSU means to me

By Mallory Johnson
Correspondent

When I started college at Southern Miss, I was extremely nervous that I would not be able to find a good community and I was afraid that I would drift away from my faith. Then I walked into the Baptist Student Union where I was blessed to find the community that I longed for and even more. Not only did the BSU give me some of the best friends and mentors, it also helped deepen my relationship with Christ and challenged me to share my faith in ways I never thought I could.

Mallory Johnson speaks to a group of college students at the Baptist Student Union on the University of Southern Mississippi campus.

“To know Christ and to make Him known” is the mission of Baptist Student Union, a ministry for students on college campuses in Mississippi. The staff and student leaders work diligently to help believers come to know Jesus at a deeper level and then challenge them to share the gospel with people on campus.

BSU fosters a culture of discipleship and evangelism through things like small groups, worship and prayer nights, weekly lunches, prayer walking, and various outreach events. We strive to be a campus ministry where nonbelievers feel welcomed, rather than scared, to walk through the door. Our hope is that students of all backgrounds will choose to come inside and experience the love of Jesus.

BSU has undoubtedly been the best part of my college experience and it will be the hardest place to say goodbye to when I graduate. I am thankful to be a part of such a wonderful organization where I have seen many lives impacted for the glory of God, including my own.

BSU State President Mallory Johnson is a senior at the University of Southern Mississippi, majoring in Video Arts. She attends the Church at 4Points and is serving this year as the BSU President at USM.
