We celebrated June 24 last week for the one-year anniversary of the reversal of Roe v. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court and the end of 50 years of federal overreach on the issue of abortion.
On that date in 2022, the court used a Mississippi case to return decisions on abortion to the several states where it belongs according to the U.S. Constitution. State legislatures and courts will now determine the future of abortion.
The earthly credit for this progress goes to a U.S. president who demonstrated that actions are more important than words. Three real conservatives were added by that president to the two conservatives already serving on the Supreme Court.
That gave the court a basic five conservative/three liberal/one moderate membership. The moderate is a true milquetoast justice, appointed by a so-called conservative president, who has a good bedside manner but questionable opinions in many of cases before the court.
Our nation does not need leadership that follows the culture. We need leadership with courage, conviction, and character (but two out of three is better than nothing). Some folks I hear in my circles need to give credit where credit is due.
Another reason June 24 was just a beginning and not an end is the increase we have seen in chemical abortions since the Supreme Court ruling. “Mail-order abortion,” whereby a dangerous drug regimen rather than a surgical procedure is used to induce infant death and expulsion from the mother’s womb, is an ongoing and ever-increasing problem.
“States’ rights” was not acceptable when dealing with the moral issue of slavery. On that issue, our nation ultimately made a moral, biblical decision. In the same context, states’ rights cannot be used to preempt the Bible on the issue of abortion (Genesis 1:27; Jeremiah 29:11; Matthew 18:6; Luke 18:15-17).
Some conservative pretenders today want to rely on a states’ rights argument to promote unfettered abortion because they can no longer hide behind the convenient excuse of Roe v. Wade. If we are truly pro-life, we must put our money, efforts, and votes where our mouth is.
June is known by some for weddings. June is known by others for freedom and liberty. June can also be known now in our churches for the beginning of the end of the American Holocaust that is abortion, and the continuing advancement of the pro-life movement that will culminate in the elimination of infanticide everywhere in our nation. We still have much to do.
