Many medical schools require their graduates to adhere to the Hippocratic Oath, which includes this line: “I will follow that system of regimen which, according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of my patients, and abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous.” (Emphasis mine.)
(Quick trivia: Although “Do no harm” is often attributed to the Hippocratic Oath, it’s not actually part of it. Hippocrates penned these words in another work called “Of the Epidemics.” Now you know.)
This idea resonates with me. As I consider my responsibilities as Editor, I find wisdom in Dr. Hippocrates’ words. Simply put, I don’t want to share anything harmful or misleading. I aim to be diligent in this editorial role, especially given the publication’s rich heritage dating back to 1877.
On a positive note, I want The Baptist Record to be uplifting and encouraging. When you, the reader, spend time with us, I hope you leave feeling better than when you arrived. We’re surrounded by “bad news,” and while we can’t ignore it, I’m committed to also sharing good news. After all, the Gospel literally means “good news,” and we intend to be a conduit for that uplifting message.

Our focus will primarily be on sharing stories from Mississippi Baptists, detailing what God is doing in our churches and individual lives. Just as Jesus used storytelling to convey messages, we plan to do the same.
God is on the move, and it’s crucial to highlight what He’s doing. My hope and prayer are that you’ll be inspired and encouraged by what you read.
I view our journey as a collaborative effort. If something noteworthy is happening in your church that you believe would benefit Mississippi Baptists, please share it with me. While I can’t guarantee that every story will be published, I can promise that your submission will be thoughtfully considered.
I’m genuinely excited for the days ahead. Becoming the Editor was never something I actively sought, but the path that led me here has been anything but dull. William Perkins left an indelible legacy at The Baptist Record, and I aim to honor it, just as he honored those who came before him.
We’ll see where the Lord leads us. I’ll do my best to follow His guidance.
