Mississippi Baptists encouraged by convention fellowship

Mississippi Baptists love a fellowship. In that spirit, Mississippi Baptists attending the 167th Southern Baptist Convention in Dallas enjoyed participating in the Mississippi Baptist Fellowship in the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.

The event was scheduled as a come-and-go from 6:30 – 9 p.m. Over 400 people pre-registered, and by 8 p.m. 320 phone chargers had been given away.

“It’s encouraging to be around a lot of really faithful brothers and sisters around our state that are getting after it,” said Scott Lucky, pastor of Parkway Church in Clinton, “and it’s encouraging to know you’re not alone.”

Davis Snyder, a pastoral intern at Parkway Church, shared that this was his first convention.

“It’s been really encouraging,” Snyder said. “Something that has especially stood out has just been the number of faithful pastors, just to see and be around them. It’s so encouraging to see that there’s more than just us. I’m looking forward to my first business session.”

“This is so encouraging,” said Dean Stewart, pastor of LaBelle Haven Church in Olive Branch. “First off, there are my lifelong friends I’ve been in ministry with. Bragging on the Lord, talking about all that’s going on in their church and in their lives.”

Charlie Brand, pastor of Senatobia Bible Church in Senatobia, attended the fellowship with his wife Maggye. Senatobia Church is a church plant from Longview Point Church in Hernando. “We don’t know where we’d be without all their help and support,” aid Brand. “We went through the 242 church planting network training and had Mississippi Baptist Convention support, and that’s been good for us.

“Maggye and I attended our first convention in New Orleans two years ago,” Brand continued. “It was really good. I feel honored to be in this room with lots of men and women who’ve served God so well. I was just telling someone a minute ago — I love the business part and all that goes on here, but my favorite part is getting to catch up with brothers and sisters in Christ.”

Paul Davis is worship pastor at Northcrest Church in Meridian. He is also serving on the Order of Business Committee at the Southern Baptist Convention. “Immediately following the convention in Indianapolis, I got a letter saying, hey, the election has been certified and you’re now on the Order of Business and you now work for us for three years,” said Davis.

“It’s been very interesting. I’m almost 60, and I’ve been a Southern Baptist all my life. I was even born at Baptist Hospital in Memphis. You can’t get more Southern Baptist than that. I have attended state conventions, have attended national conventions. And really, until you serve on a committee like Order of Business, you really don’t know how it works.

“When the convention starts, I’ll be handling the schedule of personalities and people on and off of stage and handling what’s going on there when we’re not meeting,” Davis continued.  “Because when you guys are at breaks at lunch and things like that, then we’re going to be meeting and looking at all the motions that have happened during the day and where they’re going to be sent and what’s going to be going on. I think we’ve got a great convention planned.”
