BSU: I knew where I needed to be

When I came to Delta State University in Cleveland in January 2019, it was my first time ever being away from home. I was scared about how the “real college world” would look. For the first month or so at Delta State, I was the textbook definition of a hermit. The only time I left my dorm was to go to class — until one day I met a girl who was involved in the Baptist Student Union (BSU).

She was so welcoming to me, a girl she had never met, and her kindness stuck with me. The moment I stepped into the BSU Center with her, I knew that was where I needed to be. It was the place where I would meet my forever friends.

At BSU, our directors Andrew Kappenman and Josh Warren push us to get out on our campus and minister to the other students in any way we can. Even something as little as introducing yourself to someone new can end up making a huge impact in that person’s life.

Missions is something that is near and dear to my heart. It’s all about sharing the love of Christ right where you are, with the people you are around. Missions doesn’t just happen in far-off countries, but should also happen in the cities we are in. Missions should be happening everywhere we look — even on our college campuses.

It is a joy being able to minister to those on our campus because of how Christ continually ministers to us in many ways, from his Word to the people he puts around us. Being a part of the Delta State BSU has helped me grow in my faith in so many ways, and having this community has shown me how sweet it is to be a part of the body of Christ.

State BSU Missions Team member Sydni Collins is a senior at Delta State University, majoring in Elementary Education. She attends Calvary Church, Cleveland, and will be serving her campus this year on DSU’s BSU Lead Team. For more information on BSUs on Mississippi campuses, visit mississippibsu.org/.
